Chef Wandile Mabaso Brings His Art to Keyes Art Mile

The food artist takes over the bar at The Atrium in Rosebank

Joburg Eats

Wandile Mabaso calls himself a food artist, and it’s not just a clever tagline. His cooking treats plates like canvases and ingredients like paint. Now he’s taken over the bar at The Atrium in Keyes Art Mile, bringing his signature style into Rosebank’s cultural precinct.

The Chef

Mabaso first made his mark at Les Créatifs, the restaurant that helped define fine dining in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs. There he built a reputation for dishes that were as visually striking as they were technically precise. Every plate looked like it belonged in a gallery, even if it was destined for the table.

The Concept

The Atrium sits at the heart of Keyes Art Mile, surrounded by galleries and tied into Rosebank’s wider art scene. Mabaso’s presence here feels almost inevitable. Food as art, in a space dedicated to art. The bar becomes an extension of the galleries, with plates that could hang on walls if they weren’t meant to be eaten.

Before You Go

  • Location: The Atrium, Keyes Art Mile, Rosebank Best time:
  • When: First Thursdays, when the full art scene comes alive
  • Style: Small plates for sharing, cocktails, and visual presentation
  • Price range: Mid to high Booking: Recommended for evenings and weekends

Why It Matters

The intersection of food and art is often talked about but rarely achieved. Putting a chef who genuinely thinks about food as art into a genuine art space creates something that works on both levels. For Rosebank, it’s another step in the neighbourhood’s evolution as Johannesburg’s cultural centre.
