Check who qualifies, what documents to prepare and why applying for funding is separate from securing a place to study.

Choosing a course is one decision. Finding the money to study is another. NSFAS applications for 2027 are open, giving eligible students an opportunity to apply for support at public universities and TVET colleges.

Work towards 31 October 2026. That is the closing date currently displayed on NSFAS’s application website. The minister’s launch statement gave 18 November, but because official information lists different dates, do not leave your application until November.

Who can apply?

South African citizens and permanent residents can apply for funding for approved qualifications at eligible public universities and TVET colleges.

The bursary’s financial requirements include:

  • Non-SASSA applicants: combined household income of R350,000 or less a year.
  • Applicants with disabilities: combined household income of R600,000 or less a year.
  • Verified SASSA grant recipients: automatically meet the financial requirement.

Household income is assessed before tax and other deductions. Applicants must still meet the other funding requirements and complete verification.

What can NSFAS help pay for?

Bursary funding can cover registration and tuition, alongside approved allowances for costs such as learning materials, accommodation, transport and living expenses. The support available depends on your circumstances and the funding rules.

If your household income is above the bursary threshold, check the separate NSFAS loan criteria. Loans are repayable under their terms, so understand the agreement before accepting funding.

Five things to check before submitting

  • Your contact details: use your own working cellphone number and email address.
  • Your personal information: make sure your name and ID details are correct.
  • Your consent form: complete all required sections and signatures.
  • Your documents: upload what the portal requests, with clear text and every page visible.
  • Your submission: finish the application and save the reference number. A profile or saved draft alone is not a submitted application.

Afterwards, check myNSFAS regularly for updates and requests for additional information.

Remember the other application

Applying for NSFAS does not secure a university or college place. You must apply separately to your chosen institution and meet its admission requirements.

Check the deadline for your specific course directly with the institution. Its applications may close before NSFAS’s funding window does.

Where to apply and get help

NSFAS applications are free. Keep your password and one-time PIN private, even if someone is helping you complete the form.

The Bottom Line

Before you put the application aside, check that it has been submitted and that you have saved your reference number. Starting early leaves time to fix a missing signature or unclear document while you continue planning your studies.
