Ten kilometres in just over half an hour. That was Tayla Kavanagh’s performance at the Brasov Running Festival in Romania on Sunday, 4 October 2026.

Her 30:50 finish put her fifth in the race and under the South African women’s 10km road record. She bettered the 31:12 Glenrose Xaba ran in Durban in July 2024, becoming the first South African woman to run the distance on the road in under 31 minutes. The record remains subject to Athletics South Africa’s ratification.

Just how fast is that?

Kavanagh averaged 3 minutes and 5 seconds per kilometre.

At that pace, she would cover a 5km route in 15 minutes and 25 seconds, then do it again without stopping. For anyone who has checked their watch during a run, that gives the result some perspective.

She also took 36 seconds off her previous personal best, improving on her 31:26.

Two breakthroughs in 15 days

The Romania result followed another national record in Copenhagen on 19 September, when Kavanagh ran 14:51 over 5km at the World Athletics Road Running Championships.

She finished fourth there, becoming the first South African woman to break 15 minutes for a road 5km.

From her first 10km to a national record

Kavanagh began her road-running career with a 10km race at 16. Nine years later, she has set a new national benchmark over that same distance.

After a season spanning track championships and road races, she said she was looking forward to an off-season break to rest both physically and mentally.

The Bottom Line

Fifth place does not usually make the biggest headline. This time, it deserves one: Kavanagh crossed the line behind four competitors, but ahead of every South African woman’s 10km road time before her.
