Interesting Facts
  • The Mponeng Gold Mine, located south-west of Johannesburg, is the deepest active mine on Earth, plunging over 4 kilometres straight into the crust. Because of the planet's internal heat, rock temperatures at the bottom reach a deadly 60°C. To make the tunnels survivable for workers, massive refrigeration plants pump millions of kilograms of ice slush from the surface daily to lower the air temperature to a manageable 30°C.

  • The No-Water Wonder: Most of the world's mega-cities were built next to a major river, natural harbour, or massive lake. Johannesburg is one of the only massive metropolitan areas in the world that was not founded near a navigable body of water. It exists exactly where it is purely because of the gold reef discovered underground in 1886.

  • A Rollercoaster G-Force Record: Located at the Gold Reef City theme park in Johannesburg, the Tower of Terror is a vertical-drop rollercoaster that holds a massive record. When it plunges riders 50 metres straight down into an old open mining shaft, it pulls an astonishing 6.3 Gs, making it one of the highest G-force experiences on any rollercoaster in the world.
