A day out with the grandparents could cost less this month. Johannesburg Zoo is offering free admission to visitors aged 60 and older throughout October 2026. Bring an identity document to confirm your age at the entrance.

The usual senior admission is R81, so a qualifying couple saves R162 on entrance fees. Visitors can bring their own food and use the picnic areas, keeping lunch costs manageable too.

Two Dates to Put in Your Diary

Thursday, 22 October: bring the family for R22 each

The zoo’s R22 admission special applies to accompanying family members on this date. Seniors qualifying for the October offer still enter free.

For example, two qualifying grandparents visiting with two grandchildren would pay R44 in admission altogether, excluding parking and extras.

Tuesday, 27 October: a seniors’ celebration from 09:00

A special programme with #67Blankets will include unplugged music, a knitting and crochet activation, grocery hamper giveaways, and City information stands, including assistance from the Revenue Department

Organised groups should arrange their visit with the zoo beforehand. Guests are encouraged to bring a picnic and a blanket or comfortable folding chair.

Before You Go

  • Offer ends: 31 October 2026. Bring your ID.
  • Location: Corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and Upper Park Drive, Parkview. The main public entrance is on Upper Park Drive.
  • Visiting hours: The visitor guide lists 08:30 to 17:30, with last entry at 16:00.
  • Parking: R20 for cars and minivans.
  • Picnics: Your own food is welcome. Alcohol and braais are not permitted.
  • Accessibility: The zoo currently lists its wheelchair service as suspended. Visitors needing mobility assistance should contact the zoo before travelling.

The Bottom Line

22 October offers the clearest saving for a family visit: qualifying seniors enter free, while accompanying relatives pay R22 each. Pack a lunch, budget for parking, and keep your ID documents handy.
