Gauteng School Offers Are Out: Parents Have Seven Days to Respond

About 300,000 Grade 1 and Grade 8 placement offers have been released for 2027, but families will not all receive them at the same time.

Parents and guardians who applied for Grade 1 or Grade 8 places at Gauteng public schools should begin checking their phones and online admissions profiles.

The Gauteng Department of Education started releasing 2027 placement offers at 16:00 on Thursday, 15 October. About 300,000 offers had been issued by the following day, with 130,233 applicants already accepting placements.

Parents have seven days from receiving an offer to respond through the Gauteng online admissions system.

Offers are being released in phases. Parents who have not received an SMS should therefore continue checking their application profiles rather than assuming that their applications were unsuccessful.

An Offer Does Not Always Mean a First Choice

The department has warned that not every learner will be placed at the family’s preferred school.

Demand is heavily concentrated at certain schools, particularly at secondary-school level. More than 20 high schools reportedly received over 1,800 Grade 8 applications each, exceeding the places available.

Where selected schools are full, the department may offer learners places at alternative schools with capacity.

The official admissions calendar says parents can receive offers from more than one school where spaces are available. This is why the announcement should be understood as approximately 300,000 offers, rather than 300,000 confirmed individual placements.

What Parents Should Do

Parents and guardians should:

  • Check the cellphone number used during the application.
  • Log in to the Gauteng Online Admissions portal.
  • Review each offer carefully.
  • Accept an offer within seven days.
  • Continue monitoring the portal if no offer has arrived.
  • Contact the department if the application contains missing or incorrect information.

The latest departmental figures show that 781,476 school applications were submitted for 346,556 individual learners. Parents could apply to several schools for one child, which explains the large difference between applications and learners.

The placement phase runs from 15 to 30 October. Learners who cannot be accommodated at any of the schools selected during the application process may subsequently receive offers from alternative schools with available places.

Parents requiring assistance can contact the Gauteng Department of Education on 0800 000 789.

The Bottom Line

Receiving an offer starts a seven-day response period. Parents should check their SMS messages and online profiles regularly, as placements are released in phases, and silence in the first few days does not necessarily mean no offer is coming.
