As the 2026 FIFA World Cup gets underway, Johannesburg football fans will have the opportunity to experience the tournament in a lively community setting without the cost of a ticket. Melrose Arch is set to host a free World Cup Fan Park, bringing supporters together to watch some of the tournament's biggest matches on large outdoor screens.
Whether you are a lifelong football supporter or simply enjoy the excitement that comes with a major sporting event, the fan park promises an atmosphere that captures the spirit of the World Cup.
A Shared Football Experience
The precinct will feature live screenings of key matches across dedicated viewing areas. The Main Piazza will accommodate approximately 500 spectators, while The Square will provide seating for a further 250 fans, allowing hundreds of supporters to enjoy the action together.
Watching football alongside fellow supporters often becomes part of the experience itself, with every goal, save, and close call shared by the crowd.
The Tournament Begins
The fan park officially opens on 11 June 2026, with festivities beginning at 7:30 pm, followed by the opening match at 9:00 pm.
South African supporters will be especially focused on Bafana Bafana's opening fixture against Mexico, with additional group-stage matches against Czechia on 18 June and South Korea on 25 June also scheduled for screening at the venue.
For many fans, these matches will be among the highlights of the tournament as the national team competes on football's biggest stage.
Entertainment for the Whole Family
The event is designed to appeal to more than just football enthusiasts. Families attending the fan park can also enjoy children's entertainment, with Minions characters James and Henry expected to make appearances during the event.
The combination of football, entertainment, restaurants, and the open-air setting makes the precinct an attractive destination for groups of friends and families alike.
