There is something unmistakably South African about a potjie.

It's never just about the food. It's about gathering around the fire, sharing stories, comparing recipes and enjoying a meal that's been slow-cooked with care.

That's exactly the atmosphere visitors can expect when the Parkview Potjiekos Competition returns to George Hay Park on Sunday, 26 July.

Hosted by Nicarela Charity, the annual event brings together more than 50 teams, each hoping their secret recipe will impress the judges. For everyone else, it's simply a chance to enjoy great food, live music and one of Johannesburg's friendliest community events, while supporting a worthy cause.

More Than a Competition

Every pot tells a different story.

Some recipes have been passed down through generations, while others are closely guarded family secrets. From traditional favourites to creative twists, visitors can expect a wide variety of flavours served with pap or rice.

Throughout the day, there will also be live music, local food vendors, craft stalls, a beer garden and entertainment for children, making it an easy outing for families and groups of friends.

Every Bowl Helps Someone Else

The event is about more than good food.

Proceeds from the day support Nicarela Charity, which raises funds for community projects and charitable organisations. Every potjie sold helps make a difference while giving visitors the chance to enjoy a hearty winter meal.
