Salt usually stays in the background of a restaurant menu. At The Salt Road in Houghton, it gets its own mention.

Based at 10 2nd Avenue Boutique Hotel, the restaurant explores salting techniques and different varieties through its food. The spring 2026 menu names Oryx Desert Salt, West Coast Fleur de Sel and Baleni Sacred Salt among those used across the dishes.

Chefs Craig Cormack and Beau du Toit are behind the concept, bringing their interest in salt, preservation, and seasonal ingredients to Johannesburg.

What’s on the Spring Menu?

For a sense of the choice and budget, the published spring menu includes:

  • Pan-fried potato gnocchi, R180: vegetables, seasoned ricotta, lemon brown butter and basil.
  • Wagyu beef burger, R215: three-cheese chilli sauce, garlic aioli, bacon jam, pickled jalapeños and potato wedges.
  • Oxtail bitterballen, R145: listed among the sharing plates.
  • Craig’s malva pudding, R120: served with custard and vanilla ice cream.

The menu offers a straightforward main course or several plates to share. Prices and dishes may change with seasonal availability.

  • Service times: Confirm your preferred breakfast, lunch or dinner sitting directly when booking.

The Bottom Line

The distinction is in the detail: familiar dishes presented with attention to the salts used to season them. It gives curious diners something specific to explore without committing to a tasting menu.
