Two Tshwane Township Names Approved for Registration |
Dinokeng View and Menoatlou have been officially approved as geographical names in the City of Tshwane. |

Two township names in the City of Tshwane have been approved for registration by Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie.
Dinokeng View and Menoatlou were published in Government Gazette No. 55599 on 19 October 2026.
The approvals were made under section 10(2) of the South African Geographical Names Council Act.
These are new registrations, not renamed places
The Gazette lists Dinokeng View and Menoatlou as “names to be registered”.
It does not identify them as replacements for existing township, suburb or town names. This means the announcement concerns the registration of new geographical names, rather than the renaming of established places.
The two Tshwane names form part of a broader notice containing 12 approved names. The remaining entries relate to geographical features in KwaZulu-Natal.
How geographical names are registered
South Africa’s geographical naming system covers natural and human-made features, including towns, suburbs, human settlements, stations, airports, rivers and mountains.
Applications may be submitted by government departments, provincial and local authorities, property developers, organisations or members of the public.
The South African Geographical Names Council considers applications and makes recommendations to the minister, who may approve names for official registration.
The public may still object
Anyone dissatisfied with an approved name may submit a written objection to the minister within one month of its publication in the Government Gazette.
Objections or comments may be emailed to Sagnc@dsac.gov.za.
As the notice was published on 19 October 2026, interested parties must respond within the prescribed one-month period.
The Bottom Line
Dinokeng View and Menoatlou are newly approved township names in Tshwane.
They are names being registered for geographical features, not new names replacing familiar Gauteng towns or suburbs. |
