The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) says 2,248,795 vehicle licence discs nationwide are due to expire during November and December 2026. Gauteng accounts for the largest share, with 851,687 discs.

Whether you use your car for work, school runs or everyday errands, checking your expiry date now can help you avoid a last-minute renewal.

Check Your Own Deadline

Look at the expiry date printed on your licence disc. The RTMC’s announcement does not mean every motorist must renew during these two months.

There is a 21-day grace period after expiry, calculated from the date on your current disc. Late renewal beyond that period attracts penalties and arrears.

Renew Online Through NaTIS

The official NaTIS website offers online renewal and payment:

  • Register or sign in.
  • Select “View Motor Renewals”.
  • Choose your vehicle.
  • Check your personal and delivery details.
  • Pay by bank card.

Your new disc is couriered to your address, so allow time for delivery.

Prefer to Renew in Person?

Visit your registering authority or a participating post office. For a vehicle registered in your name, take:

  • Your identity document.
  • Proof of residential address.
  • Your renewal notice (MVL2), if received.
  • Payment for the licence fee.

If the utility bill is in someone else’s name, take that person’s affidavit confirming you live there, with the bill attached.

No renewal notice? Complete an ALV application form. Company-registered vehicles require additional documents, including business and proxy documentation. Confirm the requirements with the branch before visiting.

Small Checks That Can Save You Trouble

Before submitting your renewal:

  • Match the vehicle details: make sure you select the correct vehicle, particularly if you own more than one.
  • Check the delivery address: use an address where you can receive the courier.
  • Confirm the total cost: check the renewal amount and any service or delivery charges before paying.
  • Keep your receipt: save your payment confirmation and application reference for follow-up.
  • Set your next reminder: add the expiry date to your calendar, with an alert beforehand.

The Bottom Line

Don’t wait for a renewal reminder. Check the expiry date on your disc and choose the renewal method that suits you. Having the right documents ready, and allowing time for delivery if you renew online, can help you avoid unnecessary delays and late penalties.
