Johannesburg is about to add another remarkable attraction to its winter calendar.
From 18 to 30 July 2026, Hyde Park Corner will host what is believed to be the world's largest handmade scarf chandelier, transforming the Centre Court into a colourful display of creativity, generosity and community spirit.
The spectacular installation celebrates the tenth anniversary of the Secret Scarves Shh... campaign, an initiative by 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day that has spent the past decade warming both hearts and lives across South Africa.
A Decade of Warmth and Kindness
The Secret Scarves Shh... campaign began with a simple idea. Volunteers, affectionately known as the KnitWits, hand-knit and crochet scarves, then leave them in public spaces for anyone who needs them.
Each scarf carries the same heartfelt message:
"I AM NOT LOST. If you are cold and need me, please take me."
Over the past ten years, thousands of scarves have been placed on park benches, fences, trees and other public spaces across the country, offering warmth, comfort and dignity to people facing winter's cold.
A Centrepiece with a Purpose
This year's anniversary is being marked with an extraordinary installation created by the 67 Blankets Gauteng KnitWits. Suspended above Hyde Park Corner's Centre Court, the giant chandelier is expected to become one of Johannesburg's most photographed winter attractions.
The installation forms part of the Yarn by Design Expo, where visitors can also learn to knit or crochet, donate wool and discover more about the campaign's work in communities across South Africa. Before You Go
