Your Freedom Day Long Weekend Guide: Free Museums, Markets and Music

From free Apartheid Museum entry to night markets, cycling events, and music festivals

Freedom Day falls on Monday, 27 April this year, which means one thing: a long weekend. This year marks 32 years since South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994.

If you are staying in Joburg, you have plenty of options. From free museum entry to night markets, cycling events, and music festivals, here is your complete guide to the weekend.

Free Entry: Museums and Historic Sites

Monday 27 April brings free entry to two of Joburgs most significant historic sites.

The Apartheid Museum in Ormonde opens its doors for free. This is one of the most powerful museums in the country, taking visitors through South Africa's 20th-century history and the fight for liberation.

Constitution Hill in Braamfontein also offers free entry. The site includes the Constitutional Court and the Old Fort, with the monthly Art and Justice Tour running on Saturday, 25 April, for those who want a guided experience.

Markets and Outdoor Events

Bedfordview Night Market kicks off the weekend on Friday, 24 April at Bedfordview Country Club. Expect street food, live music, and what the organisers describe as sugar-dusted fun.

Wine Forty Four at 44 Stanley in Milpark hosts its Endless Summer Edition on Sunday, 26 April. Small-batch wines, sunshine, and good company.

KAMERS/Makers takes over St Davids Marist in Inanda from Monday, 27 April to Sunday, 3 May. This is one of South Africa's largest curated markets, featuring fashion, homeware, art, and design from local makers.

Homies x Girlies Freedom Day Ride on Monday, 27 April, starts at 44 Stanley. Girls On Bikes and Banditz Bicycle Club lead a relaxed social cycle through Joburg.

Music and Nightlife

The Brother Moves On debuts new music from their Flora trilogy at Jozi Gold Brewing Company on Saturday, 25 April. This genre-blurring band is one of the most exciting acts in South African music right now.

Sober Fest 2026 takes over Soweto Theatre on Sunday, 26 April. This is a full day of sober celebration with music, wellness, comedy, and community healing.

Deep in the City Festival transforms Montecasino into a global-inspired dancefloor on Sunday 26 April, powered by South Africa's top DJs.

Theatre and Arts

The 12/12 Live Arts Festival by POPArt runs from Thursday 23 to Sunday 26 April at Space.com theatre in Joburg Theatre, Braamfontein. The format is 12 languages, 12 stories, 12 minutes each.

Groove Biennale III runs from Wednesday 22 April to Tuesday 28 April across multiple venues. The event explores alternative nightlife, music, and architecture with ballroom, workshops, panels, and showcases.
