Melville Is Back: Inside Joburg's Nightlife Renaissance |
7th Street is buzzing again with new venues, returning favourites, and creative energy driving a major comeback |
Melville has lived many lives: the cultural heyday of the 1990s, the student‑packed Seventh Street era, and the slow decline into shuttered storefronts. Many thought the suburb’s best days were behind it.
But you can never count Melville out.
Today, 7th Street is buzzing again. New venues are opening, familiar names are returning, and creative energy is driving a revival that feels both nostalgic and fresh.
The Creative Engine Behind the Revival
Photographer Aubrey Moloto, founder of Snaps on Seventh, has documented and fueled the neighbourhood’s resurgence. His projects like The Happening arts festival and the Melville Art Mile, spotlight local artists and small businesses.
Moloto says Melville thrives on two forces: its student connection and its role as a sanctuary for creatives. Safety has also improved thanks to CPF patrollers funded by local businesses, creating a neighbourhood where art leads and nightlife follows.

What Makes This Revival Different
This comeback isn’t about replacing the past, it’s about layering new energy over old traditions. Nights are unpretentious, venues are walkable, and the revival is community‑driven rather than corporate.
Quick Guide
Melville's comeback proves that neighbourhoods with strong creative DNA do not stay down for long. The lights are back on. The dancefloors are full. And 7th Street is waiting for you. |
