Tip of The Day

Families strolling along Rocky Street are witnessing a remarkable change: crews are clearing waste, repairing fences, and rejuvenating the Ferndale Arboretum Bird Sanctuary after years of neglect.

The sanctuary, once overrun with illegal dwellings and littered with rubbish, had become a safety concern for nearby residents in Randburg.

Residents’ ongoing complaints prompted action, and, beginning May 18, 2026, a five-day clean-up was organized by Johannesburg City Parks alongside Ward 104 councillor Emi Koekemoer, urban inspector Nokthula Ngobese, and local volunteers.

In just two days, 28 truckloads of debris were removed, illegal structures were dismantled, and daily efforts restored order and beauty to the area.

The renewed sanctuary now offers a safer haven for birdlife and a peaceful escape for residents, proof that community persistence and partnership can turn neglected spaces into neighborhood treasures.
