After months of pothole complaints, there is finally some movement on Bramley’s Crystal Road.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has inspected the damaged road and confirmed that the necessary repairs are scheduled. The operational problems that delayed the work have also been resolved.

Residents still do not have a date for when repairs will begin.

Complaints date back to January

Ward 81 community leader Theo Lengwati says the pothole-riddled road has been reported since January 2026.

JRA initially pointed to operational difficulties, including asphalt shortages, as one reason for the delay. The agency has since said those challenges have been resolved, but could not provide a commencement date for Crystal Road.

A wider asphalt problem

Crystal Road has not been the only road affected.

Problems at JRA’s asphalt plant have disrupted road maintenance in other parts of Johannesburg. The agency has been working to restore operations and address the resulting maintenance backlog.

If a pothole damages your car

Motorists can submit a claim to JRA for vehicle damage linked to road infrastructure it maintains.

Claims require supporting documents and are assessed individually, so submitting one does not guarantee compensation. Photographs of the pothole, its location and the vehicle damage can be useful evidence.

Crystal Road is not fixed yet, but there has been progress.
