Brianna Robinson had wanted this title for years.

But with the national U19 women’s championship on the line in Cape Town, the Joburg Squash player found herself 2-1 down against Elzandri Janse van Rensburg.

Robinson won the next two games, 11-6 and 11-5, to complete a 3-2 comeback and claim the U19 women’s title at the Growthpoint South African Junior Nationals on Saturday, 15 August.

Two tough matches in two days

The final was not Robinson’s only five-game test.

A day earlier, she had taken a 2-0 lead against KwaZulu-Natal’s Makayla Naidoo, only for Naidoo to win the next two games. Robinson recovered to take the decider 11-4.

Against Janse van Rensburg, the pressure came from the other direction. Robinson lost the second and third games before fighting back to win the fourth and fifth.

Speaking after the final, Robinson told The Athlete that winning the tournament had been a major goal since she first started competing.

From Canada to a national title

There is another reason the timing stands out.

Only weeks earlier, Robinson had represented South Africa at the 2026 World Junior Squash Championships in Canada. The official World Junior Championships player list confirms her selection for the South African team.

In the individual competition, she also produced a comeback against Brazil’s Laura Silva. Robinson lost the first two games, won the next two and pushed the match to a fifth before Silva eventually prevailed.

A few weeks later, another five-game battle ended differently.

This time, Robinson walked off court as South Africa’s U19 champion.
