At the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA) at Wits University, pottery and wheel‑throwing workshops are opening the studio doors to the public. Each three‑hour session is guided by experienced practitioners, offering structured instruction in proper facilities.

The Workshops

Two options are available:

  • Pottery workshops focus on hand‑building techniques.

  • Wheel‑throwing workshops teach the rhythm and precision of the potter’s wheel.

Prices are R450 for pottery and R550 for wheel‑throwing.

The Experience

Working with clay is tactile and absorbing. The wheel’s spin creates a hypnotic rhythm as participants learn to center the clay, open it, pull up the walls, and shape the form. It’s a rare chance to slow down, engage the senses, and discover the meditative quality of craft.

Before You Go

  • Where: FADA Gallery, Wits University, Braamfontein
  • Price: R450 for pottery, R550 for wheel-throwing
  • Duration: Three hours per workshop
  • Booking: Contact sarahjbsteel@gmail.com or 082 457 8177

Why It Matters

Craft education has declined in South Africa, leaving fewer opportunities for hands‑on learning. Workshops like these fill that gap, reconnecting people with traditional techniques and offering mental health benefits through the simple act of working with your hands.
