Gauteng Just Got Its First IMAX with Laser and It Is in Rosebank

 

If the last movie you watched felt a little flat, Rosebank has the fix.

 

Ster-Kinekor just opened Gauteng's very first IMAX with Laser theatre at The Zone @ Rosebank. It opened its doors on Friday, 10 April, and it is not just another cinema screen. It is the most advanced movie experience in the province.

 

What Makes It Different

 

Regular IMAX is already big. IMAX with Laser takes it further.

 

The screen is 17 metres wide and nearly 10 metres tall. That is roughly the size of a double-storey building lying on its side.

 

The projector uses a 4K laser system that produces the widest range of colours ever seen on a cinema screen. Blacks are deeper. Bright scenes pop with a sharpness that makes standard projection look washed out.

 

Then there is the sound. A multi-channel system fills the 285-seat theatre from every direction. You do not just watch the movie. You feel it.

 

Every seat in the house was positioned for the best possible view. There is no bad seat.

 

What Is Showing

 

The theatre launched with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Project Hail Mary. But the real excitement is what is coming next.

🎬 Michael (the Michael Jackson biopic) — from 22 April

🎬 Mortal Kombat 2 — from 8 May (Filmed for IMAX)

🎬 Mandalorian and Grogu — from 22 May

🎬 Dune: Chapter 3 — from 18 December

 

If a film says "Filmed for IMAX" it was made to be seen on this screen. Watching it on a laptop would be doing it a disservice.

 

Not Just a Cinema

 

The Zone @ Rosebank has quietly turned into a full entertainment hub. Along with the new IMAX, the complex now has:

 

Cine Prestige for a luxury experience with platters and drinks.

SK-Xperience with axe throwing and escape rooms.

A Kids' Cinema with bean bags and slides to keep little ones busy.

 

You could easily make a whole afternoon or evening of it.

For years, Joburg movie fans have had to settle for standard screens or drive out to find premium options. This changes that.
