Gauteng’s school application window has closed, but parents still have an opportunity to submit outstanding paperwork before placement offers begin.

The department received 805 688 applications for 346 877 individual learners entering Grade 1 and Grade 8 in 2027. Families could apply to several schools for the same child, which explains the difference between the two figures. 

For parents, the next steps are checking documents, monitoring their application and responding when an offer arrives.

What needs to be done by Friday?

Parents with outstanding certified documents must submit or upload them by 12:00 on 11 September 2026. This deadline applies to paperwork for existing applications; the main application window closed on 4 September.

Log into the Gauteng Online Admissions System and check what is outstanding. Supporting documents generally include:

• The parent or guardian’s ID or passport.
• The learner’s birth certificate or passport, with applicable immigration documents.
• Proof of home address.
• Proof of work address if that application option was used.
• A clinic card or immunisation record for Grade 1.
• The latest Grade 7 report for Grade 8.

I uploaded everything. Must it be verified by Friday?

Friday is the submission deadline. Schools and the department handle verification before placement.

If your documents appear missing despite being uploaded, contact the school concerned or the GDE contact centre with your application details and proof of submission.

Valid proof of home address is particularly important because it forms part of the placement criteria. The department has warned that applications without it, or supported by invalid or fraudulent documents, will be treated as incomplete and will not receive offers. 

When will I hear about a place?

Offers are expected to begin on 15 October 2026, with notifications sent by SMS to the number supplied during registration. Check your online application status too.

Parents will have seven days to respond. Offers start on that date; every family should not expect an SMS on the first day.

What if all my chosen schools are full?

The department says it may offer a place at the next closest school with available space once all the schools selected in an application have been found to be full.

Parents can challenge a transfer placement through a formal objection and appeal process. Ask GDE for the applicable instructions promptly if you disagree with an offer, and follow the response deadline rather than leaving it unanswered.
