Gold Reef City: Where Johannesburg's Gold Rush Meets Roller Coasters

There are very few places in Johannesburg where you can spend a full day on roller coasters, walk through a real gold mine, and still have enough shared moments for the drive home to feel like part of the experience.

Family Fun

Most theme parks are built on empty land.

Gold Reef City is different.

Located on the historic Witwatersrand gold fields, the park stands on the ground where Johannesburg's gold mining industry helped shape the city in the late 1800s. Rather than replacing that history, many of the original mining features were incorporated into the attraction.

The result is a destination that combines thrill rides, family entertainment, and a glimpse into Johannesburg's past.

More Than Just a Theme Park

One of Gold Reef City's most distinctive features is its connection to a real mining site.

Visitors can still see original mine headgear, historic mining structures, and Victorian-inspired buildings that reflect the area's gold rush heritage.

It's a reminder that long before the roller coasters arrived, this land played a role in the story of Johannesburg itself.

Something for Every Age

The park offers a mix of attractions designed for different age groups.

Older children and adults can tackle major rides such as the Anaconda and the Tower of Terror, while younger visitors have access to gentler family attractions and dedicated children's areas.

Water rides, family-friendly attractions, restaurants, and shaded seating areas help make it easier for families to spend a full day at the park without feeling rushed.

Step Underground

For many visitors, the mine tour is one of the highlights.

Guided tours take guests underground into a preserved section of an old mine, where they can learn how gold was extracted and how mining contributed to Johannesburg's rapid growth.

It offers a very different experience from the above-ground rides and provides valuable insight into the city's origins.

Just the Facts

  • Location: Ormonde, Johannesburg
  • Operating Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 09:30 to 17:00. Open daily during Gauteng school holidays. Closed on Christmas Day.
  • Tickets: Day passes start from approximately R295 when booked online. Children under three enter free of charge.
  • Mine Tours: Available as part of selected ticket options.
  • Food: Restaurants, fast-food outlets, and refreshment kiosks are available throughout the park.
  • Tip: Booking online is usually cheaper and can reduce waiting times at the entrance.

The Bottom Line

Gold Reef City offers something many attractions struggle to achieve: it appeals to different generations simultaneously.

Children come for the rides, adults appreciate the history, and families get a full day of entertainment without having to choose between the two.

It's one of the few places in Johannesburg where you can ride a roller coaster in the morning and explore part of the city's mining history in the afternoon.
