The route you travel, the water you use and the food on your plate all have a place in Johannesburg Climate Week.

Running from 21 to 25 September 2026, the African Climate Alliance programme brings people together to explore these connections through outings, practical activities and conversation.

Monday: See the city from a different perspective

City in Motion explores how the way Johannesburg is laid out affects people’s lives. A journey by train and bicycle towards Soweto opens up conversations about the relationship between neighbourhoods, inequality and climate.

It offers a chance to think about who can move easily through the city and how a fairer city could look.

Tuesday: Who gets heard on energy?

The morning’s Climate and Energy Accountability Cafe focuses on children’s voices in decisions that will shape their future. Participants will help develop ideas for greater accountability in climate and energy decisions.

In the afternoon, We Can’t See the Sunset examines the unequal costs of South Africa’s energy crisis. A panel discussion follows, exploring extraction and how affected communities respond.

Wednesday: Get involved in water issues

Every Drop Matters brings communities, researchers and environmental practitioners together to explore what fair access to water means in a changing climate. A river clean-up is followed by activities and discussion.

Thursday: Follow the story of your food

From Soil to Plate looks at the connections between food, land, culture and livelihoods. Storytelling and practical activities will explore how climate affects food systems and the people who depend on them.

Friday: Bring your creative side

Beyond the Screen explores climate, gender and community action with African Climate Alliance and Well Worn Theatre Company.

The programme includes Burning Rebellion, discussion and a zine-making workshop. A zine is a small, self-made publication that can combine words, drawings and other creative material.
