Johannesburg’s municipal swimming season will start a month later than usual this year.

The City has moved the opening date from 1 September to 1 October 2026, saying it needs more time to meet health, safety and operational requirements.

A phased reopening is planned, with 36 municipal pools expected to open during October. The City is also considering extending the season into April 2027 to help make up for the lost month.

Albertskroon’s problem goes back further

For Albertskroon residents, this is not simply a four-week delay.

The local swimming pool has remained closed while a faulty pump and broader maintenance issues continue to delay repairs.

Ward 86 councillor Chantelle Shawe said in August that efforts had been made to restore the facility, but questioned whether the necessary work could be completed in time for the original September opening.

Meanwhile, residents and community volunteers have been working on the surrounding recreational area, including clean-ups and proposals to make the park safer and more usable.

It is part of a much bigger pool problem

Johannesburg owns 57 municipal swimming pools, but only 36 are currently scheduled to reopen during October.

The problem is not new.

GroundUp reported in March that only 32 of the city’s 57 pools had been confirmed open during the 2025/26 swimming season, with maintenance and infrastructure problems affecting several facilities.

The City says the extra month this year will be used to deal with outstanding compliance and maintenance work before the phased reopening begins.

Albertskroon still has local support

One thing the pool has not lost is community interest.

Residents, volunteers and local representatives have continued pushing for the pool and surrounding park to be brought back into use.

What is still missing is a confirmed reopening date specifically for Albertskroon.

On the plus side, residents have not given up on the facility. The next step is simpler: finish the repairs and give the community a firm reopening date.
