Johannesburg Restaurants Win Big at South Africa Restaurant Awards 2026

Local eateries take home major honours including Best Restaurant in Gauteng, Best Chef for the third consecutive year, and multiple category wins

Joburg Eats

Johannesburg has once again proved that it is one of South Africa's most exciting food destinations. At the 2026 South Africa Restaurant Awards, held at Hotel Sky in Sandton, restaurants from across the city collected some of the evening's biggest honours, showcasing the depth and diversity of Joburg's dining scene.

For locals, the awards are more than industry recognition. They are another reminder that world-class dining can be found right here at home.

Leading the Way

Qunu Restaurant, located at the Saxon Hotel in Sandhurst, was one of the night's biggest winners, taking home both Best Hotel Restaurant and Best Restaurant in Gauteng. The restaurant has earned a reputation for combining African ingredients with refined culinary techniques in an elegant setting.

Another major winner was Chef Moses Moloi of Gigi Restaurant, who was named Best Chef for the third consecutive year. Winning the title once is an achievement. Winning it three years in a row reflects consistency, creativity, and dedication to excellence.

More Reasons to Explore Johannesburg

Several other Johannesburg establishments were also recognised during the awards:

  • Trump's Grillhouse and Butchery in Sandton received the Best Hospitality award.
  • S!gns was named Best New Restaurant, highlighting it as one of the city's newest culinary destinations.
  • Flames Restaurant, overlooking the city from The Westcliff, won Best Fine Dining.
  • Alto234, one of Africa's highest urban bars, received the Best Bar award.
  • Tempo Luxury Restaurant was recognised for Best Culinary Experience.
  • Olive and Plates earned the Best Overall Guest Experience award.
  • Aurum Restaurant was named Best Restaurant in Sandton, reinforcing the area's reputation as one of Johannesburg's premier dining precincts.

More Than Just Awards

Great restaurants do more than serve exceptional food. They create jobs, support local farmers and suppliers, attract visitors, and contribute to the city's identity.

Johannesburg's success at this year's awards reflects a food culture that continues to evolve, combining local talent with international standards while remaining distinctly South African.

As winter settles over the city, there may be no better time to discover a new favourite restaurant, or revisit one that has just been recognised as among the best in the country.
