Jozi Gold Brewing Company Opens in the Former Orbit Space

Craft beer and food in the iconic Braamfontein jazz venue

The Orbit was one of Johannesburg's most important jazz venues. For years, it anchored the Braamfontein nightlife scene, hosting local legends and international touring acts. When it closed, the loss was felt across the city's music community. Now the space has reopened as Jozi Gold Brewing Company, a craft brewery that honours the building's history while creating something new.

The Beer

Master Brewer Thokozani Sithole runs a 25,000-litre operation that spans from light lagers to experimental brews. The Golden Taj Basmati Rice Lager is the signature beer, made with basmati rice for a crisp, clean finish designed for the Johannesburg climate.

The Food

Chef Joshua Stadt handles the kitchen, with a menu built around beer-friendly food. The sorghum ale-battered fish is a clever nod to South African ingredients, using the same grain that goes into some of the beers. The smoked brisket pizza combines American barbecue technique with Italian format.

Before You Go

  • Location: De Korte Street, Braamfontein
  • Hours: Check current opening times, typically afternoon to late evening
  • Tastings: Available, ask staff for recommendations
  • Food: Full menu served during operating hours
  • Music: Live performances on weekends

Why It Matters

The loss of The Orbit was a blow to Johannesburg's cultural life. That it has become a brewery with serious brewing credentials and thoughtful food is a positive outcome. Jozi Gold creates something new while respecting the building's history as a place where people gather to enjoy themselves.
