Kayla Szalay had a swimming costume in the car when she decided to try canoeing. That unplanned introduction grew into international competition and a dream of representing South Africa at the Olympics.

“I had a costume in the car, so I gave it a shot,” she told Northcliff Melville Times. “I absolutely loved it.”

From learning to paddle to representing her country

Dabulamanzi Canoe Club’s profile records that Szalay began paddling at 13 and has represented South Africa in Slovakia, Poland and Portugal.

She has trained under Attila Adrovicz, an Olympic silver medallist, for more than six years. She is also learning to coach, having completed a Level 2 coaching course and gained practical experience alongside him.

Her international experience includes competing in Portugal in July 2025. Northcliff Melville Times reported that she raced the 500m and 1,000m events and partnered with Cody Stallard in a 5,000m mixed relay, finishing 18th.

The work behind the blazer

Receiving her green Protea blazer in 2025 was a proud moment. Her routine can involve two training sessions a day, combining paddling with gym work, running and cycling.

She also described losing a race by one second after arriving at the start, too confident. The lesson was to stay focused, even when earlier races had gone well.

Learning when to adjust her training has been another part of her development. Her Olympic ambition remains a goal she is working towards.

Helping the next paddlers find their feet.

Alongside her own training, Szalay is developing a coaching role focused on helping juniors build technique and confidence.

For readers curious about trying the sport, Dabulamanzi offers introductory sessions with equipment provided. Beginners must be able to swim.

The Bottom Line

Szalay is still pursuing her biggest sporting ambition, while making room to help younger paddlers begin their own journeys.
