Leon Bezuidenhout: Rising Tennis Star from Johannesburg |
Ten-year-old ranked number one in South Africa selected for prestigious Croatian tournament |
At just ten years old, Johannesburg tennis player Leon Bezuidenhout is already making a name for himself far beyond local courts.
The young athlete is currently ranked number one in South Africa in the under-10 category and has now been selected to compete in the prestigious Smrikva Bowl tournament in Croatia in June 2026, an invitation-only event featuring some of the world’s top junior tennis talent.
A Rapid Rise in South African Tennis
Leon started playing tennis at the age of three and began formal coaching a few years later. His progress has been unusually fast. His performances have already earned him a special exemption to compete in the under-12 division despite still being only ten years old, a strong sign of how highly he is rated within junior tennis circles.
He currently trains at Wanderers Club under coach Vaughn Hunter, where preparations are now focused on adapting his game for European clay courts ahead of the Croatia tournament.
More Than Just Tennis
Away from the court, Leon still balances a fairly normal school life. He attends Laerskool Randhart and also participates in rugby and athletics alongside his tennis training.
According to those close to him, the upcoming tournament will also mark his first time travelling overseas.
Leon has described the opportunity as both exciting and humbling, saying he hopes to make both his family and South Africa proud.
Why It Matters
South African tennis has produced internationally recognised players before, but opportunities at the elite junior level remain rare, especially at such a young age.
Leon’s selection for the Smrikva Bowl places him among a very small group of international junior players currently being watched closely in development circuits.
And while he is still at the beginning of his journey, his rapid rise is already placing Johannesburg junior tennis firmly on the international radar. |
