Lonehill Dam is a familiar part of neighbourhood walks and family picnics. Its restoration could protect both the outdoor space people enjoy and the habitats that depend on the water.

The Lonehill Residents Association (LRA) is working with environmental specialists, engineers, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, and community members on a revival project. The association says it has completed extensive investigations and identified what needs to be addressed. 

Ageing infrastructure, leaks and invasive aquatic weeds are among the challenges. Clearing the surface is only part of the planned work: the broader programme includes repairing leaks in the dam wall, improving water quality and restoring natural habitats. 

For residents and visitors, the intended benefit is a healthier dam within a park they use. For wildlife, the project aims to protect biodiversity by improving habitat conditions. These remain restoration goals, with work and funding still required.

The LRA, together with the Braai Room and Lonehill Shopping Centre, has set a R200,000 fundraising target for the end of October 2026. The money is intended to cover essential costs needed to get Phase 1 underway.

An update published on 4 September reported R10,000 raised towards that target, leaving R190,000 outstanding at the time. The R200,000 is an initial target, not a confirmed price to restore the entire dam. 

Evidence of community involvement already exists. More than 800 people took part in the annual Lonehill 5km Fun Run/Walk, which supported fundraising for the revival project, according to an August report.

The next milestone is securing the funding needed to begin Phase 1. October is the fundraising deadline; a restoration completion date has not been announced. As the project advances, a work schedule and details of what the first phase will deliver would give residents a clearer way to follow its progress.
