Meet Irfan Genc: The Johannesburg Baker Proving No Dream Is Out of Reach |
The 23-year-old entrepreneur building a thriving baking business while challenging stereotypes about autism |
Twenty-three-year-old Irfan Genc is building a thriving baking business from his home kitchen, one delicious treat at a time. He also happens to live with autism. His story is a reminder that passion and determination can break through any barrier. How It All Started
Irfan launched Irfan Delights during the COVID-19 lockdown. His mother noticed his talent when he asked her to teach him how to make desserts. She saw something special in his work and suggested they turn it into a business. They started with tiramisu, which quickly became a hit and remains one of their bestsellers today. What began as a home kitchen experiment has grown into a proper business with a loyal following across Johannesburg. The Menu: Baked Goods Made From Scratch
Irfan makes everything himself, using recipes passed down from his late grandmother. Nothing is sourced from elsewhere. Every item is baked fresh at home, giving customers confidence in exactly what they are eating.
His range includes Sauf and Nut Rusks, Gulab Jamun, Choc Chip Rusks, Pecan Puffs, Chocolate Baklava, Jam and Chocolate Tart Pastries, Koeksisters, and Nutella Brownie Cake. The tiramisu that started it all is still a crowd favourite. Where to Find Him
Irfan trades at markets across Johannesburg. You can find him at the Melville Market, the Tshepo Northcliff Community Market, and regularly at Oriental Plaza. His mother says the family has been actively involved in marketing the business and helping him build a customer base. His mother describes him as super confident. If he wants to do something, he goes out and does it. Breaking Stereotypes
Irfan's success challenges common misconceptions about autism. He has risen above societal stigmas to build something meaningful. Baking has taught him that nothing should be impossible for him. His ambitions do not stop at market stalls. He has big plans for the future. He wants to open a coffee shop in Turkey, run multiple businesses, and make lots of money. Given what he has achieved so far, those dreams feel entirely within reach. A Family Affair
The business is a true family venture. Every member plays a role in supporting Irfan, from his mother and father to his extended family. The recipes connect them to Irfan's late grandmother, making each bake a tribute to family heritage. In a market filled with mass-produced foods, that personal touch has become one of the key ingredients behind Irfan Delights' success. Before You Go
