If you regularly travel on the N1 through Midrand, expect temporary traffic changes around Waterfall for the next few months.

This is due to the construction of a new K60 bridge over the N1, part of a Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport project.

SANRAL says temporary lane arrangements are needed so construction can continue safely while keeping traffic moving through the area.

How long will the diversions last?

The arrangements affect both directions, but the dates differ:

• N1 southbound: 6 August to 6 November 2026, between km 53.8S and km 52.4S.
• N1 northbound: 14 August to 13 November 2026, between km 50.4N and km 52.4N.

The N1 is not completely closed during this period. Traffic is being moved through temporary lane configurations around protected construction areas.

Drivers should nevertheless allow extra time, particularly during busy periods, as changed lane arrangements can affect traffic flow.

Why is the bridge being built?

The K60 project is more than work on the freeway itself.

Gauteng's transport department describes the broader K60 Waterfall City project as a new road link between the R55/Woodmead Drive and Allandale Road.

The new bridge allows that route to cross the N1.

According to the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport, the project is intended to improve traffic flow, road safety and connectivity for communities and businesses in the area.

So while the temporary diversions may be frustrating for commuters now, they are linked to a larger transport connection being built for this rapidly developed part of Midrand.

Take extra care through Waterfall.

SANRAL is asking motorists travelling through the construction zone to:

• Plan for possible delays.
• Follow temporary signs and lane markings.
• Pay attention to warnings from traffic personnel.
• Take extra care around the construction area.

The temporary layout includes transition areas to guide vehicles into and out of the diversion, as well as a buffer between live traffic and construction workers.
