There's something motivating about joining hundreds of people on the start line. Whether you're aiming to beat your best time, complete your first road race or enjoy a leisurely walk with family and friends, race day has a way of bringing the community together.

That opportunity returns on Sunday, 19 July 2026, when the Northgate Road Race takes over Northgate Shopping Centre. Hosted by Roodepoort Athletics Club, the annual event has become a popular fixture on Johannesburg's winter running calendar, attracting everyone from seasoned athletes to casual walkers.

Choose the Challenge That Suits You

Participants can choose between a 10km Run/Walk for those looking to test themselves and a 5km Fun Run/Walk that's perfect for beginners, families and anyone wanting a more relaxed morning outdoors.

Both events start at 7:00 am, taking advantage of Johannesburg's cool winter weather before the day begins.

More Than Just a Race

The Northgate Road Race is about more than crossing the finish line. It offers an opportunity to get active, spend time with family and friends, and be part of one of Johannesburg's long-running community events.

The shopping centre venue makes the day especially convenient, with ample parking, nearby cafés and restaurants, and plenty of amenities for participants and supporters alike.

Every finisher receives a medal, while the first 1,300 participants across both events will also receive a complimentary goodie bag.

Before You Go

  • When: Sunday, 19 July 2026
  • Start Time: 7:00 am
  • Where: Entrance 4, Northgate Shopping Centre, North Riding, Johannesburg
  • Distances: 10km Run/Walk and 5km Fun Run/Walk

The Bottom Line

You don't have to be an experienced runner to enjoy the Northgate Road Race. Whether you're chasing a new personal best, taking on your first 5km or simply looking for an enjoyable way to stay active this winter, it's a welcoming event that brings the community together one step at a time.
