When a Community Comes Together, Change Happens

Few things frustrate motorists more than potholes. They damage tyres, create safety risks, and affect the appearance of a neighbourhood. In Sandown, however, residents decided that while road maintenance remains the responsibility of the municipality, they could work together to improve the streets they use every day.

After growing increasingly concerned about deteriorating road conditions, residents discussed possible solutions and chose to contribute towards purchasing tar to repair several potholes themselves.

According to those involved in the initiative, the repairs proved to be relatively simple and affordable when the costs were shared among neighbours. Smaller potholes required only a portion of a bag of tar, while larger sections needed additional material.

The completed repairs were recently inspected during a community walkabout, where several of the repaired areas demonstrated the visible difference that collective effort can make.

The initiative was born out of a desire to improve the neighbourhood rather than simply complain about its condition. By working together, residents were able to make practical improvements while showing what can be achieved through cooperation and shared responsibility.
