Sandton SPCA Raises R1.7 Million for New Rescue Vehicles |
Community donations exceed fundraising goal to replace ageing inspector fleet |
The Sandton SPCA has raised more than R1.7 million in a community-driven campaign to replace its ageing rescue vehicle fleet, exceeding its original target of R1.5 million.
Three new vehicles have already been purchased, improving the organisation’s ability to respond to animal welfare cases across the region. Community Support Behind the Campaign
General manager Nick Smith said the funds came from a wide mix of supporters, including trusts, residents, and long-time donors.
The campaign was launched after the SPCA’s existing vehicles began experiencing frequent breakdowns, which affected response times and operational reliability.
According to Smith, support came in many forms, from large trust donations to smaller personal contributions. Some supporters raised funds by participating in events such as the Midmar Mile, climbing challenges in Morocco, selling books at the SPCA bookshop, and even donating birthday money.
He said the response reflected strong community commitment to animal welfare in Sandton and the surrounding areas.
What the New Vehicles Mean for Operations
Inspector manager Xolane Mncube said the new vehicles will significantly improve day-to-day operations.
They will allow inspectors to carry out proactive work, conduct investigations, and respond more efficiently to animal cruelty cases without the risk of transport breakdowns.
The upgraded fleet also reduces time lost on the road, improving overall response capability. Future Plans
The SPCA is currently working toward acquiring a fourth vehicle, with a long-term goal of expanding the fleet to five.
The organisation said continued community support will be key to reaching that target. Why This Matters
The Sandton SPCA handles a high volume of animal welfare cases, rescues, and inspections across a large operational area. Reliable transport is essential for a timely response, particularly in urgent cruelty and neglect cases.
The fundraising effort highlights sustained community involvement in supporting frontline animal welfare services in Johannesburg.
