Sankayi Saturday Sessions Bring Live Music and Vinyl Culture to Morningside

A new weekly music series offers relaxed evenings of great food, live performances and carefully curated vinyl sets.

Events Calendar

There's something special about listening to music the way it was meant to be heard.

The gentle crackle of a vinyl record, the warmth of analogue sound and the atmosphere of a room filled with people simply enjoying good music are at the heart of the new Sankayi Saturday Sessions, launching at Sankayi Restaurant & Lounge in Morningside on 11 July 2026. Building on the success of the venue's popular jazz series, the new weekly programme combines live performances with curated vinyl experiences in an intimate setting.

A Different Kind of Saturday Night

Rather than focusing on loud clubs or crowded venues, the Saturday Sessions are designed for people who want to slow down, enjoy a meal and discover exceptional music.

The series launches with The Afrikan Rekord, a vinyl experience curated by DJ Bob that celebrates the musical heritage of Africa and its diaspora. Guests can expect an eclectic mix of jazz, Afrobeat, funk, soul, Latin grooves and global sounds, all played exclusively on original vinyl records.

A Month of Outstanding Performers

Each Saturday features a different guest artist alongside DJ Bob's signature vinyl sets.

The opening evening on 11 July welcomes Zviko Dryad, followed by Bathini Kowane on 18 July, whose love of jazz and vinyl collecting brings a fresh perspective to the series.

The month concludes with one of South Africa's most celebrated musicians, Sipho "Hotstix" Mabuse, performing on 25 July. Best known for classics such as Burn Out, Mabuse's career spans decades and includes collaborations with some of the country's greatest musical legends.

More Than Just the Music

Sankayi has become known for pairing quality entertainment with a relaxed dining experience.

Guests can settle in for dinner, enjoy a drink with friends and spend the evening surrounded by carefully curated music in an elegant setting. It offers an alternative to the traditional nightlife experience, where conversation and live performance take centre stage.
