Online applications, WhatsApp support and free office Wi-Fi offer more ways to access grant services, while personal assistance remains available.

Sorting out a social grant can involve transport costs, time away from work and a long wait. SASSA’s expanding digital services aim to reduce the number of trips beneficiaries need to make.

The agency’s programme includes online applications, WhatsApp enquiries, electronic verification and self-service kiosks. Chief executive Themba Matlou outlined the developments during an Eastern Cape media engagement in September.

What you can do online

SASSA’s online services include submitting applications, changing payment details and completing electronic life certification, which helps verify that a beneficiary is still alive. Available options depend on the grant and the person’s circumstances.

WhatsApp self-service options also allow beneficiaries to check:

  • Grant application status.
  • Whether a grant review is required.
  • Whether proof-of-life verification is due.

Checking your status helps you know what to do next; it does not necessarily complete the required review or verification.

Online applications are already being used at scale. In May, Matlou said more than 382,000 clients submitted social grant applications online during the 2025/26 financial year. These were applications submitted, not approvals.

Free Wi-Fi and help using it

SASSA says it provides free Wi-Fi at its offices so beneficiaries can access online services on their smartphones. Officials are also available to assist people who need help using the platforms.

For someone with a phone but limited data, this offers a way to use digital services with support nearby. Ask staff about access and assistance at your local office.

Kiosks and an app are part of the plans.

SASSA says it is rolling out self-service kiosks at its offices, with more advanced kiosks planned for strategic locations by the 2027/28 financial year.

September reporting also describes a mobile app in development, with an expected launch in the third quarter of 2026/27. These are planned milestones, so check availability before travelling specifically to use a kiosk.

Keep your contact details current.

One useful step requires no new app: make sure SASSA has your correct cellphone number.

The agency sends grant-review notifications by SMS. An outdated number could mean missing instructions about your grant.

  • Follow review requests: attend an appointment if instructed.
  • Check the document requirements: take the information requested in your notification.
  • Ask about help if you cannot travel: beneficiaries who are bedridden or medically unable to visit should contact their local office about available arrangements.

Failure to respond to a review request may result in a grant being suspended or lapsing.

Where to get help

  • Official information: Visit the SASSA website.
  • Toll-free enquiries: 0800 60 10 11.
  • Email: GrantEnquiries@sassa.gov.za.
  • Before sharing personal details: confirm the correct online or WhatsApp service through SASSA’s official channels.

The Bottom Line

You do not have to manage everything on a smartphone. SASSA says face-to-face support will remain available as digital services expand. Before spending money on transport, ask whether you can handle your enquiry remotely and what to bring if a visit is needed.
