Sinesipho Dambile’s second place in Brussels was part of a bigger achievement: seven Diamond League appearances this year, seven podium finishes. The 24-year-old South African ran 19.89 seconds in the men’s 200m final on Saturday, 5 September, adding another sub-20-second performance to his season. 

American Kenny Bednarek took the title in 19.62, matching the fastest time in the world this year. Zimbabwe’s Makanakaishe Charamba finished third, putting two African sprinters on the podium. 

More than one fast race

Dambile’s Diamond League season began with third place in Rabat, followed by second-place finishes in Stockholm and Oslo. In Doha on 19 June, he won in a personal best of 19.74 seconds.

He followed that with second-place finishes in Lausanne in 19.98 and Zurich in 19.82 before lining up in Brussels. Across those seven meetings, he collected one win, five runner-up finishes and a third-place finish. 

There was a Commonwealth title along the way, too. On 31 July, Dambile won the men’s 200m final in Glasgow in 19.96 seconds, ahead of Nigeria’s Udodi Onwuzurike and Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor. 

Dambile was South Africa’s only podium finisher in the official Diamond League events at the two-day final. In the men’s 100m, Gift Leotlela finished fifth in 10.01 seconds and Akani Simbine seventh in 10.03.

Zakithi Nene placed sixth in the men’s 400m in 44.44, while Prudence Sekgodiso finished eighth in the women’s 800m in 2:02.34.

South Africa also had a winner in the invitation programme.
