The Pride Lands Return: Disney's The Lion King JR. Roars Back to Parktown

A beloved story, an entirely new production and dozens of young performers come together for one of Johannesburg's most heartwarming family theatre experiences this winter.

Events Calendar

Few stories have captured imaginations across generations quite like The Lion King. From the unforgettable opening notes of Circle of Life to Simba's journey of courage, loss, and belonging, it remains one of Disney's most enduring classics.

This winter, that story comes alive once again as Disney's The Lion King JR. returns to the National Children's Theatre in Parktown from 3 to 19 July 2026. But this isn't simply a repeat of previous seasons.

A Fresh Take on a Family Favourite

Now in its third season, the production has been completely reimagined with a new direction, fresh choreography, and an updated creative vision. Even if you've seen previous productions, audiences can expect a very different experience this time around.

The production follows young Simba as he learns what it means to face loss, embrace responsibility, and find his place in the Circle of Life. Along the way are the memorable songs, colourful characters and moments of humour that have made the story a favourite with audiences around the world.

Young Talent Takes Centre Stage

One of the production's greatest strengths is its cast.

Around 70 young performers, aged between 7 and 13, bring the Pride Lands to life with impressive singing, dancing and boundless energy. They are joined by the choir of Donaldson Primary School, adding another layer of music and community spirit to the performance.

It's a reminder that children's theatre isn't just entertainment, it's also a platform where young performers develop confidence, creativity and a lifelong love of the arts.

A School Holiday Favourite

Running during the winter school holidays, The Lion King JR. is an easy choice for families looking for an outing that everyone can enjoy.

Whether your children are discovering Simba's story for the first time or you're introducing them to a musical you loved growing up, the production offers an opportunity to experience a timeless story performed by some of Johannesburg's brightest young talent.
