Finding a restaurant that works equally well for adults and children is not always easy. The Old Oak Restaurant and Family Centre at Royal Johannesburg offers both a grown-up dining experience and plenty of space for younger visitors to play.

Set beside the golf courses in Linksfield North, the restaurant has an outdoor play area with jungle gyms, trampolines, swings, climbing rocks and rope climbers. It is considerably more than the small play corner found at many family restaurants.

The menu combines Mediterranean flavours with South African influences. Adults can choose from breakfasts, salads, pasta, steaks, seafood and wood-fired pizzas, with several vegetarian dishes also available.

Children have their own menu featuring fish and chips, chicken strips, sliders, spaghetti bolognese and macaroni cheese. One interactive option lets them build their own pizza with a chef.

The restaurant takes its name from a large oak tree that once stood on the property. Remnants of the tree have been incorporated into the venue to link it to Royal Johannesburg’s history.

Although The Old Oak is situated at a golf club, it welcomes members, residents and other patrons. Booking ahead is a good idea, particularly when planning a weekend family outing.
