A Douglasdale pothole ignored for three years got repaired in 24 hours after one viral swim

A Pothole in Joburg Became Famous

Johannesburg has lots of potholes. But one pothole in Douglasdale has become the most famous one in South Africa, and maybe even the world.

For three years, people living on Balder Road complained about a huge hole in the street. It started when a pipe burst underground. After that, the road slowly broke apart. Residents reported the problem again and again, but nothing was done.

So they decided to try something different.

They threw a pool party.

The Swim Everyone Talked About

Helen Zille, who is running to become Johannesburg’s mayor, arrived wearing snorkelling gear. The 75-year-old climbed into the pothole, which was full of dirty water, and pretended to go for a swim.

She wore goggles, dipped under the water, and posed for cameras.

Soon, the video spread all over social media. Many people laughed. Others were shocked. The stunt was funny, but the problem behind it was serious. Residents had been asking for help for three years. Then one viral video suddenly made everyone pay attention.

The City Came the Next Day

Less than a day later, Joburg mayor Dada Morero came to see the pothole for himself. Workers began removing the water. They fixed the leak, replaced pipes, and started repairing the road.

A road that had been damaged for three years was finally being fixed.

Joburg’s MMC for Transport, Kenny Kunene, also visited the area. He called Zille a “desperate politician.” But by then, the repairs had already started.

The World Noticed

The story did not stay only in South Africa. A news station in Canada, CTV News, also showed the video. They said it highlighted years of poor management by the city.

Zille also spoke on Kofifi FM about why she wants to run for mayor.

She said she has lots of experience leading a city and a province, and that she believes she can help Johannesburg too.

When people asked about her age, she laughed and said she still feels energetic and excited to work for Joburg.

Why This Story Matters

This is not only a funny story about a politician swimming in a pothole.

It is also a story about how people sometimes have to do something unusual to get leaders to listen.

The residents of Balder Road did what they were supposed to do. They reported the problem. They waited. They reminded the city many times. But nothing happened.

In the end, it took a shocking and funny stunt to get the road fixed.

For many drivers in Johannesburg, this story feels very real. Lots of people have had to dodge potholes, damage their tyres, or drive around broken roads.

And it leaves people asking one big question:

Should a city really need a stunt like this before it fixes a road?
