What Can R200 Buy You in Joburg? More Than You Think |
From skating and wildlife to museums and waterfalls, you can still have a proper Joburg outing for R200 or less per person. |

R200 disappears quickly these days. But when it comes to getting out of the house, it can still go surprisingly far.
Here are some paid Joburg experiences currently costing R200 or less per person.
1. Apartheid Museum - R170📍 Ormonde
Explore one of South Africa's most important museums, tracing the history of apartheid through photographs, film, documents and personal accounts. Admission includes an audio tour.
2. Constitution Hill - From R150📍 Braamfontein
Explore the former prison complex and Constitutional Court. Choose the one-hour Highlights Tour or spend the full R200 on the two-hour experience.
3. RollEgoli - R160📍 Bryanston
A proper roller-skating outing without breaking the R200 limit. Bring your own skates, and you'll pay even less.
4. Joburg Zoo - R135📍 Parkview
One of the better options if you want several hours out rather than a quick activity. The current municipal tariffs took effect on 1 July 2026.
5. Northgate Ice Rink - From R90📍 Northgate
If you're looking for something more active, go ice skating. Tuesday evenings can be particularly good value, with the current special bringing entry and skate hire to around R90.
6. Sci-Bono Discovery Centre - R60📍 Newtown
Interactive science exhibits make this particularly good for families. It's also one of the cheapest paid attractions on the list.
7. Melville Koppies - R100📍 Melville
Part hike, part history lesson. Explore indigenous Highveld vegetation and archaeological sites showing human activity in the area long before modern Johannesburg existed.
8. Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden - Around R100📍 Roodepoort
Come for the gardens, but make sure you walk to Witpoortjie Waterfall. The reserve is also well known for its birdlife, including Verreaux's Eagles.
Pick by Mood
Before You Go
Prices and operating hours can change, so check directly with the venue before setting off. Some special exhibitions, events or equipment hire may cost extra.
The Bottom Line
You don't need a R500 budget to plan something interesting in Joburg.
R200 can still get you onto the ice, into a museum, around the zoo, onto roller skates or out to a waterfall.
The difficult part might just be deciding which one to do first. |
