76 Hours in Soweto Marks 50 Years Since the Uprising |
Four day programme honours the past while building the future across Soweto |
Soweto is preparing for a major four day celebration that will mark fifty years since the 1976 uprising. The 76 Hours in Soweto programme runs from June 13 to 16 and promises a mix of heritage, culture and community building.
The event is a partnership between tourism operators, schools and community organisations. The goal is to ensure local communities feel the economic benefits of the anniversary while sharing Soweto's story with visitors from across the country. What Happens Each Day
The programme kicks off on Saturday June 13 with the Biyo Festival. This opening event sets the tone for the days ahead with music, food and cultural performances.
Sunday June 14 brings the Generation Now Creative Market. Local artists, designers and makers will showcase their work. Visitors can buy directly from the creators and support the local economy.
Monday June 15 features Sober Discussion solution sessions. These talks focus on practical ways to address challenges facing the community. The sessions aim to move beyond remembering the past to actively building the future.
Tuesday June 16 is the main commemoration day. The Finish What Was Started walk takes visitors through key historical sites. The Vilakazi Street Experience offers a guided journey through one of the most famous streets in South Africa. Why This Matters
The 1976 Soweto Uprising was a turning point in South African history. Thousands of students marched against the use of Afrikaans in schools. The events of that day changed the course of the nation.
Fifty years later, the community wants to honour that legacy while creating new opportunities. The 76 Hours programme encourages visitors to stay local, explore more and support guesthouses, restaurants, artists and youth led businesses. Before You Go
