At 223 Creative Hub in Rosebank, a women‑owned tea startup is changing how we think about luxury. Founded by Georgia Kellow in 2022, Cup Classique is not just blending leaves, it is reshaping luxury from the ground up, rooted in local sourcing, sustainability, and a slower, more intentional way of making and drinking tea.

Luxury in a Cup

For Georgia Kellow, luxury is not about excess or imported prestige. It is about locality, craftsmanship, and sustainability. The confidence that something made slowly, thoughtfully, and close to home can hold its own. At Cup Classique, each blend is introduced like a story, encouraging curiosity rather than correctness. The flagship space at 223 Jan Smuts Creative Hub, part gallery and part gathering place, invites visitors to pause and savour.

The Blends

  • Savannah Glow: Fruity and warming, with pineapple, rooibos, and ginger.

  • African Mint: Small batch, blended with garden mint and lemongrass, using indigenous mint that resists farming.

  • Kalahari Spice: A bold choice for spice lovers, reminiscent of chai.

  • Three Is A Party Verbena: Closest to green tea, with lemon skins, lemon balm, and verbena.

  • 223 Blend: Inspired by the gallery, with rosehip, lemon, and buchu, crisp, aromatic, and passion‑fruit‑like.

  • Each blend reflects South Africa’s biodiversity, crafted to highlight what grows naturally and locally.

From Garden to Tea

The story began with soil. Childhood days spent gardening with her aunt instilled an early understanding of food, labour, and care. Later, while completing a Master’s in Anthropology, Kellow explored urban agriculture, transforming a barren patch beneath a jacaranda tree into a productive garden. Supplying households and restaurants led her to herbs, and ultimately, to tea.

Local Sourcing, Real Impact

Despite South Africa’s rich biodiversity, most herbal teas on local shelves are imported. Even mint is often packaged locally but grown elsewhere. Kellow asked a simple question: What if tea could be grown, processed, and consumed locally? Cup Classique now works with small‑scale farmers across the country, keeping delicate herbs close to home. If it cannot be scaled sustainably in South Africa, it is left out.

Plastic‑Free Teabags

Frustrated by imported materials and microplastics, Kellow developed handmade, plastic‑free muslin teabags. Each one is cut, filled, and sealed by hand, a labour‑intensive process that prioritises quality and job creation. In a market driven by speed, Cup Classique chooses meaning over scale.
