Delta Park: Joburg's Free Green Lung With Trails for Everyone |
One of the city's largest parks offers mountain biking, bird watching, and South Africa's first sensory trail for the sight-impaired |
Delta Park is one of Johannesburg’s largest and most loved green lungs, stretching across grassland and woodland in the northern suburbs. Unfenced and free to access, it’s a favourite for dog walkers, families, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking space to breathe.Trails and Activities
Long mountain biking and hiking trails follow the Braamfontein Spruit, winding through shaded paths and open fields. Routes suit all fitness levels, and cyclists and walkers share the space respectfully.
A highlight is the sensory trail, developed in partnership with the South African National Council for the Blind. It allows visitors to experience nature through touch, sound, and smell, a rare inclusive feature in South African parks.
Birdwatchers can explore hides overlooking dams and wetlands, while the southeast corner offers open lawns perfect for picnics. The Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary, fenced within the park, adds to the biodiversity with species such as kingfishers, herons, and spotted eagle owls. The Environmental Centre
Established in 1975, the Delta Environmental Centre is a cornerstone of conservation education in Gauteng. Each year, more than 20,000 learners take part in its programmes, which range from wildlife courses to holiday workshops. Adults can also join structured learning experiences, making the centre a hub for environmental awareness. What You Need to Know
