Encounters Documentary Festival Returns with Oscar ContendersThe Encounters South African International Documentary Festival returns for its 28th edition this June. The festival brings 58 documentaries from 33 countries to screens across Johannesburg and Cape Town. Opening Night and Headline Films
The festival opens with Truck Mama, the African premiere of Zipporah Nyaruri's documentary about Eva, a female truck driver on the Kenya-Sudan route. The film premiered at IDFA, the world's largest documentary festival, where programmers praised it as a nuanced portrait of a woman balancing single parenting with long distance travel. Two Oscar contenders headline this year's program. Tutu, winner of the 2026 Berlin Peace Film Prize, explores the life of the Nobel Peace Prize winning rebel cleric. Nuisance Bear, winner of the 2026 Sundance Grand Jury Prize, follows a polar bear encroaching on human settlements as its Arctic habitat disappears. South African World Premieres
Encounters will host four world premieres from South African filmmakers. Notes from the Underground traces the history of Cape hip hop. Marxism and Period Pains unpacks how period pain affects girls and women navigating a capitalist reality. The Hour After Midnight investigates the death in detention of trade unionist Dr Neil Aggett during apartheid. My Father's Son documents a Jewish director meeting his Black brother from another mother for the first time over Zoom. Big Names on Screen
The lineup includes documentaries about major figures. Elon Musk Unveiled offers a critical look at the Tesla founder and concerns about self-driving cars. The Eyes of Ghana profiles Chris Hesse, cinematographer to Kwame Nkrumah, directed by two-time Oscar winner Ben Proudfoot. Knife follows Salman Rushdie's recovery after the 2022 assassination attempt. Amadou and Mariam track the Grammy-nominated Malian couple until Amadou Bagayoko's death last year. Why Documentaries Matter Now
Festival director Mandisa Zitha says the festival offers a chance to slow down and look behind the headlines. In an era of rapid news cycles and artificial intelligence, Encounters provides space to understand our world more deeply. The festival has grown into Africa's leading documentary event. It consistently programs films that spark conversation and challenge audiences to think differently about the world. Practical Details
