Fuel Prices Drop in July as Motorists See Relief at the Pumps

Petrol drops by up to R2.01 per litre, diesel by R3.59 as stronger rand and lower oil prices bring savings

General Interest

South African motorists are paying significantly less for fuel this month following substantial price cuts that came into effect on 1 July 2026. The reductions apply to both petrol and diesel, with diesel seeing the biggest decrease.

For many households and businesses, it is the first meaningful drop in fuel costs after several months of higher prices.

Lower Prices Across the Board

The July adjustment reduced the price of Petrol 93 by R2.01 per litre and Petrol 95 by R1.96 per litre.

Diesel recorded even larger decreases. The wholesale price of 0.05% sulphur diesel fell by R3.14 per litre, while 0.005% sulphur diesel dropped by R3.59 per litre.

In Gauteng, the retail price of 93 unleaded is now R25.94 per litre, while 95 unleaded is R26.11 per litre.

For a vehicle with a 50-litre fuel tank, motorists filling up with 95 unleaded will pay approximately R98 less than they did in June.

Why Prices Came Down

South Africa adjusts fuel prices monthly using a pricing formula based largely on international petroleum product prices and the rand-to-US dollar exchange rate.

During the latest review period, lower international fuel prices and a stronger rand combined to reduce the cost of imported fuel, resulting in the July price cuts.

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy also noted lower freight costs, which contributed to the overall decrease.

What It Means for Motorists

Lower fuel prices provide some welcome relief for households managing rising living costs and businesses that rely on transport.

While the savings are immediate, fuel prices remain closely linked to global oil markets and currency movements, meaning future monthly adjustments will continue to depend on international conditions.

What You Need to Know

  • Effective Date: 1 July 2026
  • Petrol 93: R25.94 per litre in Gauteng (down R2.01)
  • Petrol 95: R26.11 per litre in Gauteng (down R1.96)
  • Diesel 0.05% sulphur: Down R3.14 per litre
  • Diesel 0.005% sulphur: Down R3.59 per litre
  • Example Saving: Around R98 on a 50-litre tank of 95 unleaded compared with June

The Bottom Line

The July fuel price adjustment delivers some of the biggest reductions motorists have seen in recent months. While future prices will continue to fluctuate with global markets and exchange rates, the current decrease offers meaningful savings for commuters, businesses, and anyone planning to spend more time on the road this month.
