Nine Yards: Johannesburg's New 'Green Town Square' Opens in Parktown North |
A vibrant community space bringing together food, nature, and connection |
Johannesburg has a new public space designed less around rushing through and more around slowing down.
Nine Yards has officially launched in Parktown North, completing the next phase of a precinct that aims to bring greenery, food, and community into one shared urban space.
Described as a modern “green town square,” the development combines landscaped outdoor areas with restaurants, cafés, seating spaces, and pedestrian-friendly walkways designed for lingering rather than simply passing through.
A Different Kind of Johannesburg Space
Johannesburg has never lacked energy, but genuinely public spaces that feel relaxed, open, and community-focused can still be surprisingly rare.
Nine Yards leans into that idea deliberately. Instead of centring the experience around retail alone, the precinct focuses heavily on atmosphere, open green areas, outdoor seating, slower movement, and spaces designed for people to spend time rather than just shop.
The project first opened in phases during late 2025, with the full precinct activation completed in May 2026.
What You’ll Find There
The space brings together a mix of dining spots, gathering areas, and landscaped sections intended to feel more like a neighbourhood meeting point than a traditional commercial centre.
Visitors can expect:
It is equally suited to solo afternoons with a coffee and a book as it is to casual lunches or weekend meetups with friends.
Why It Matters
As Johannesburg continues to densify, developments that successfully combine urban convenience with accessible outdoor space are becoming increasingly valuable.
Nine Yards reflects a broader shift in how parts of the city are being designed, with greater emphasis on walkability, greenery, and spaces that encourage people to stay, interact, and spend time outdoors.
For Parktown North, it adds another layer to an area already known for cafés, restaurants, and neighbourhood culture. But more broadly, it speaks to something many Johannesburg residents have been looking for: public spaces that feel calmer, greener, and more connected to everyday life.
Why This Matters for JoburgSpaces like Nine Yards represent a shift in how Johannesburg thinks about urban living. As the city grows denser, having accessible green spaces becomes more important. Nine Yards proves that development and nature can work together. For Parktown North residents and visitors from across the city, it adds another reason to explore this already buzzing neighborhood. The precinct joins a growing list of community-focused developments that are making Johannesburg more livable.
