Sundays on Main: Transforming CBD Streets into Vibrant Car-Free Zones |
Joburg just had its first car-free CBD event and people are already begging for more |
No Cars Just Vibes: How Main Street Sundays Brought the CBD to LifeA Street Built for People, Not CarsOn Sunday 12 April, a stretch of Main Street in the Johannesburg CBD was closed to traffic. No taxis. No cars. Just people. The event was called Main Street Sundays. It turned the road between Ntemi Piliso and Rissik Streets into a walkable, open air playground for a few hours. And it worked. The City of Johannesburg partnered with Jozi My Jozi, Young Urbanists NPC, and Johannesburg In Your Pocket to make it happen. It was the first time something like this had been done in the inner city. Yoga, Skateboarding, Art Walks and Food at Gandhi SquareThere was something for everyone. A Mind and Body zone hosted morning yoga sessions right on the pavement. Skateistan and the Banditz Bicycle Club ran an Active Mobility track for skaters and cyclists. Families explored the Art Mile, which included the Standard Bank Gallery and open air exhibitions. Play Africa turned part of the street into a pop up museum for kids. Food stalls set up at Gandhi Square. Live music filled the gaps. For many families, it was the first time they felt safe enough to let their children run freely in the heart of the CBD. Social Media Could Not Get EnoughThe response online was overwhelming. Residents and visitors flooded social media with photos and requests for more. One attendee wrote: "What a perfect day. Would really appreciate this each and every week or monthly, please." Others called it a "stunning community event" and a "celebration of our city in style." Neo Maseou summed it up: "This is what Joburg is all about. Well done on a fantastic pilot!" More Than Just a Fun Day OutMain Street Sundays is part of a bigger plan. The City is working on a Walkable Network for the inner city. The idea is to make the CBD a place people want to spend time in, not just drive through. By closing roads and inviting people to walk, skate, eat and explore, the event showed that the inner city has a future as a cultural hub. It belongs to the people who live and work there. If this pilot becomes a regular thing, it could change how Joburg thinks about its CBD for good. What to Know for Next TimeMain Street Sundays was a pilot event. No confirmed dates for the next one yet, but the demand is clear. Keep an eye on Jozi My Jozi and the City of Johannesburg social media pages for updates. The event was free to attend. It took place on Main Street between Ntemi Piliso and Rissik Streets in the CBD. |
