Njabulo Gininda shares his journey from Mpumalanga to the Joburg music scene |
From Small Town Roots to Big City Dreams
Njabulo Gininda, better known as Wordsmith, is a hip-hop artist and fashion designer making waves in Fourways. His story starts in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, where his love for music first took hold.
"My uncle was a big Tupac fan," Wordsmith recalls. "He influenced me with his music and style. He even wrote my first verse." That early spark led him to perform at school and church events, building his confidence on stage. Finding His Voice Through Writing
Wordsmith started out writing for himself. His early work focused on themes and stories that mattered to people. This practice helped him grow as a writer and performer.
"Writing about real stories shaped my style," he says. "It also improved my live performance skills and taught me how to stay on topic." Travel Opens New Doors
Moving around South Africa has changed how Wordsmith sees the world. He has visited different provinces and learned from the people he meets.
"Experiencing different places taught me how people think and live together," he explains. "I learned up to eight languages and learned to appreciate diverse cultures." Staying True to His Sound
Wordsmith believes in growing as an artist without losing what makes him unique. He stays open to new sounds but sticks to his own style.
"Research your topics thoroughly," he advises. "Draw inspiration from life outside the studio. Live, have fun, and understand others." Giving Back to the Community
Supporting others is at the heart of Wordsmith's work. He wants to lift up young creatives and honour those who came before him.
"It is important to share the light with others," he says. "Respect those who paved the way, even if you do not agree with everything they do. Showing appreciation is key." Music With a MessageEvery song Wordsmith creates carries meaning. He wants his work to inspire and teach.
"Life is serious, and meaningful change starts with small efforts," he says. "Every song reflects my life and perspective. I want to touch one person and inspire a kid. That is how change begins." Big Plans for the Future
Wordsmith dreams of building a hub for art, fashion, and workshops in the hip-hop space. He wants to grow the local economy and help young artists find their way.
"I aim to leave a mark and uplift platforms like Back to the City," he says. "I want to open doors for others and own a part of this game." Why This Story Matters
Wordsmith represents a new wave of South African artists who blend music, fashion, and community upliftment. His journey from a small town to the Joburg music scene shows what is possible when talent meets hard work. For young people in Fourways and beyond, his story is proof that local artists can make an impact while staying true to their roots. |
