South Africans Are Quietly Ditching Bank Cards for Their Phones

Something is changing at the till and most people have not even noticed.

Across South Africa, fewer people are pulling out their bank cards. Instead, they are tapping their phones and smartwatches to pay. And the numbers show it is happening fast.

The Numbers Are Hard to Ignore

All four major South African banks are reporting strong growth in digital wallet use.

Standard Bank says digital wallet spending grew 56% in the first three months of 2026. It now makes up over 13% of all card payments at tills. Just two years ago it was under 7%.

Nedbank recorded a 71% jump in digital wallet spending last year. Digital wallets now account for 22% of all their card transactions.

FNB says adoption started early and keeps climbing. Digital payments are no longer something people try once. They are part of everyday spending.

Discovery Bank reports the same trend. Their research shows 45% of South Africans already use virtual cards.

Why People Are Making the Switch

Convenience is part of it. Your phone is always in your hand anyway.

But the bigger reason is safety. Digital wallets require fingerprint, face scan, or PIN for every single payment. A physical card can sometimes process small taps without a PIN.

That matters. Discovery Bank found that fraud on digital wallets is six times lower than on physical cards. Six times.

For anyone who has ever worried about card skimming or losing a wallet, that number is hard to ignore.

How It Works

You link your bank card to a digital wallet on your phone. The main options are Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet.

Once set up, you hold your phone near the card machine the same way you would tap a card. The payment goes through in seconds.

Most shops, restaurants, and petrol stations that accept tap to pay already accept phone payments. You do not need to ask or do anything special.

The Bottom Line

This is not just a tech trend. It changes how you interact with your money every day.

Digital wallets send instant notifications for every purchase. You see exactly what you spent and where. No waiting for a bank statement.

Many banking apps now let you freeze your physical card entirely and rely only on your phone. If your card gets stolen, your money stays safe because your phone is locked behind biometrics.

For small business owners using apps like Yoco, it also means faster checkout for customers who pay by phone.
