Planning a Trip? Here's What You Need to Know About South Africa's New Digital Travel Declaration

Most international travellers must now complete an online customs declaration before leaving or entering South Africa. Here's how it works and what it means for your next trip.

General Interest

If you're planning an international trip, there's a new item to add to your travel checklist.

Since 1 July 2026, most people travelling into or out of South Africa are required to complete a digital traveller declaration before they travel.

The new system replaces the paper customs declaration for most travellers and is now part of the standard border process.

If you've travelled internationally before, this is one of the biggest changes you'll notice at customs.

Who Needs to Complete It?

The declaration applies to most travellers entering or leaving South Africa by:

  • Air
  • Road
  • Rail
  • Sea

This includes South African citizens, permanent residents and foreign visitors.

Parents or guardians can complete the declaration for children or anyone who cannot do so themselves.

When Must It Be Done?

The declaration can only be completed within 24 hours before the final leg of your journey.

Once submitted, you'll receive a confirmation that you should keep on your phone or print in case customs officials ask to see it.

What Information Will You Need?

Before you start, have the following ready:

  • Your passport or travel document
  • Your travel itinerary
  • Details of any goods, cash or valuables that must be declared

The process only takes a few minutes if you have everything prepared.

Can You Still Use Paper Forms?

For most travellers, the digital declaration is now the standard process.

SARS has indicated that paper declarations are available only in limited circumstances, where someone genuinely cannot complete the electronic version.

Why Has It Changed?

The move is part of SARS' modernisation programme aimed at making border processing more efficient.

By collecting information before travellers arrive, customs officials can process declarations more quickly, reduce paperwork and better identify travellers who require additional inspection.

For most passengers, the goal is a smoother experience rather than additional administration.

Before You Travel

Add these steps to your travel checklist:

  • Complete your declaration within 24 hours before travelling.
  • Double-check that your passport details are correct.
  • Declare any goods or currency that must be reported.
  • Save your confirmation on your phone before leaving for the airport or border.

Need Help?

If you're travelling soon and need more information or assistance:

  • Complete your declaration using the SARS Customs Online Traveller Declaration portal.
  • Download the SATMS (South African Traveller Management System) app from your device's app store.
  • Use the SARS MobiApp if you're a registered SARS eFiling user.
  • Email TravellerInfo@sars.gov.za for traveller declaration assistance.
  • Call the SARS Contact Centre on 0800 00 7277, or +27 11 602 2093 if calling from outside South Africa.

The Bottom Line

International travel already involves passports, visas, airline check-ins and security procedures. The new digital declaration is simply another step to complete before you leave.

Taking a few minutes to submit your declaration before you travel can help make your journey through customs smoother, reduce paperwork and ensure you're prepared before you arrive at the airport or border.
